Berean Standard Bible
Chapter summary
Eleazar the priest, Joshua, and the tribal heads distributed the land of Canaan as an inheritance by lot to nine and a half tribes, excluding the Levites who received only cities and pasturelands. At Gilgal, Caleb son of Jephunneh approached Joshua and reminded him of the promise made by Moses at Kadesh-barnea regarding their scouting expedition forty-five years earlier. Now eighty-five years old and still strong, Caleb requested the hill country containing Hebron and the Anakim, recalling Moses' oath. Joshua blessed Caleb and granted him Hebron as his inheritance because he had remained loyal. Following this event, the land had rest from war.
