Berean Standard Bible
Chapter summary
After the time of Abimelech, Tola from Issachar and subsequently Jair the Gileadite successively judged Israel for twenty-three and twenty-two years. Afterward, the Israelites again did evil by serving foreign deities, prompting the Lord to deliver them into the hands of the Philistines and Ammonites for eighteen years of oppression. When the Israelites cried out in deep distress and confessed their sin, the Lord initially reminded them of past deliverances and refused to save them again. However, after the people removed their foreign gods and served the Lord, He could no longer bear their misery. Finally, the Ammonites camped in Gilead while the Israelites assembled at Mizpah, and the rulers of Gilead sought a leader to launch the attack.
