Berean Standard Bible
Chapter summary
The men of Ephraim confronted Jephthah at Zaphon, threatening to burn his house down because he fought the Ammonites without them. Jephthah responded that they had failed to help him, leading him to fight the Ammonites alone with God's help. Jephthah and the men of Gilead then fought Ephraim, captured the Jordan fords, and identified Ephraimite fugitives by their pronunciation of the word Shibboleth, killing forty-two thousand of them. After Jephthah died and was buried in Gilead, Ibzan of Bethlehem judged Israel for seven years, followed by Elon the Zebulunite for ten years, and Abdon son of Hillel from Pirathon for eight years, each of whom eventually died and was buried in his respective hometown.
