Berean Standard Bible
Chapter summary
While staying in Shittim, the men of Israel engaged in sexual immorality with Moabite women and participated in sacrifices to their gods, joining in the worship of Baal of Peor. In response to the fierce anger of the LORD, Moses instructed the judges of Israel to execute those who had worshiped Baal of Peor. Amidst this, an Israelite named Zimri brought a Midianite woman named Cozbi into the camp before Moses and the weeping congregation. Phinehas, grandson of Aaron, took a spear, followed them into the tent, and killed both of them, which halted a plague that had already killed 24,000 Israelites. Consequently, the LORD granted Phinehas and his descendants a covenant of a permanent priesthood for turning away His wrath, and subsequently commanded Moses to attack and defeat the Midianites for their deceitful hostility regarding the matter of Peor and Cozbi.
