Berean Standard Bible
Chapter summary
After capturing the ark of God, the Philistines brought it from Ebenezer to Ashdod and placed it inside the temple of Dagon beside his statue. On two successive mornings, the people found the statue of Dagon fallen face down before the ark, with its head and hands eventually breaking off on the threshold. Concurrently, the LORD heavily afflicted the inhabitants of Ashdod and its vicinity with tumors. Consequently, the Philistine rulers decided to transfer the ark to Gath, but the LORD brought great confusion and an outbreak of tumors to that city as well. When the ark was subsequently sent to Ekron, the Ekronites protested out of fear for their lives, prompting the rulers to demand the return of the ark to its original place to prevent widespread death from the heavy hand of God.
