Berean Standard Bible
Chapter summary
After the ark of the LORD had been in Philistia for seven months, the Philistine priests and diviners advised returning it with a guilt offering of five gold tumors and five gold rats. The Philistines placed the ark on a new cart pulled by two cows separated from their calves, which proceeded straight to Beth-shemesh. The people of Beth-shemesh rejoiced, sacrificed the cows, and placed the ark on a large rock in Joshua's field while the five Philistine rulers watched and returned to Ekron. Because seventy men of Beth-shemesh looked inside the ark, God struck them down, prompting the survivors to ask who could stand before the LORD. Consequently, the men of Beth-shemesh sent messengers to Kiriath-jearim asking them to come and take the ark.
